Educational and Professional Background:
A.B. from Georgetown University, Summa Cum Laude in 1976
J.D./ M.S. from Georgetown’s Law & Foreign Service Schools, 1980
Professor Barrett has practiced litigation and business law in Los Angeles at Latham & Watkins, Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, Donovan Leisure Newton & Irvine, Morgan Lewis & Bockius, and in his own firm. His experience includes corporate and partnership transactions and documents, civil pretrial proceedings, including pleadings, motions, depositions, and hearings, jury and bench trials, judicial and private arbitrations, juvenile parole revocation hearings, Cumis counsel, ethics fee arbitration counsel, and serving as an ethics expert witness.
Professor Barrett teaches Professional Responsibility, Business Organizations, and Civil Procedure. He also is the Director of the Legal Aid Clinic, a store-front type student-staffed pro bono legal aid service for low-income individuals, and of the Clinical Placement Program, which places law students in judicial clerkships, government offices, legal aid services, and private law firms, where they receive hands-on experience in a real-world work environment.
Professor Barrett has been a law professor since 1991. In addition to teaching at the University of West Los Angeles for the past 15 years, he also teaches at the University La Verne and Concord law schools.
