From UWLA to the Courtroom: UWLA Alumnus David Ross (1994) Announces Judicial Candidacy

University of West Los Angeles School of Law alumnus David Ross has announced his candidacy for Judge of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, bringing more than three decades of courtroom experience and a lifelong commitment to public service to the race.

Ross earned his Juris Doctor from the University of West Los Angeles School of Law, graduating in the top 13 percent of his class and passing the California Bar Examination on his first attempt. During law school, he worked at the Los Angeles City Ethics Commission. He interned with the United States Attorney’s Office, the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office, and the Indigent Defense Counsel Office. He received the Gitelson Award for Outstanding Legal Writing and was published in the UWLA Law Review.

Currently serving as a Grade IV Deputy Alternate Public Defender for Los Angeles County, Ross has represented more than 10,000 indigent defendants over the course of his career. He has completed 113 jury trials, litigated more than 2,000 preliminary hearings, and argued thousands of contested motions. His work has taken him to courthouses throughout Los Angeles County, where he has developed a reputation for thorough preparation, professionalism, and respect for the judicial process.

In addition to his courtroom practice, Ross has contributed to legal education as an Adjunct Professor of Law at Western State University College of Law, where he taught legal writing and research and served as a Moot Court judge. He also previously served as a Judge Pro Tem in Los Angeles County Superior Court, presiding over small claims and limited civil matters.

Before entering the legal profession, Ross worked in journalism and public affairs, experiences that strengthened his skills in research, analysis, and clear communication. He credits his legal education at the University of West Los Angeles School of Law with sharpening those abilities and preparing him for the demands of trial practice.

As he seeks a seat on the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Ross brings with him more than 30 years of courtroom experience and a career shaped by public service, teaching, and a deep respect for the rule of law.
Ross says his decision to run is rooted in his belief that the justice system must serve every member of the community with dignity and fairness.
