July 2025 – UWLA Community Letter from President Brown
The University of West Los Angeles stands in solidarity with our, students, families, and communities, impacted by the recent immigration enforcement operations throughout California.
As a university devoted and committed to justice, equity, and the rule of law, we are deeply concerned about actions that undermine due process and instill fear in immigrants and our communities. We recognize that many of our students, faculty, and staff come from migrant backgrounds or serve immigrant populations. We affirm that they are valued members of our UWLA family.
We echo the concerns expressed by Mayor Karen Bass and Governor Gavin Newsom, who have spoken out against these operations. We recognize the human and civil rights implications of deploying military presence and conducting ICE enforcement actions that lack transparency or adequate legal safeguards as guaranteed by our constitution.
Our university remains committed to providing a safe and inclusive learning environment. We will be organizing educational forums to explore the legal, ethical, and constitutional dimensions of these developments. We are also anticipating developing a new legal clinic to help address the legal needs of our communities. We will have more information on that in the near future.
The UWLA community is ground in principles of justice, dignity, and the unwavering belief that the law must serve to protect the rights of all people. We strongly reaffirm this commitment and stand with our students, faculty, administrators and our communities during this difficult and perilous time. The key is that we stand united and aligned against all forms of authoritarianism and oppression. ULWA is grounded in those principles, and we will stand up against any form of activity that violate the civil and humanitarian rights of our communities.
Kindest Regards,
Robert W. Brown, President
