J. D. Program
UWLA School of Law awards the Juris Doctor Degree to students who satisfactorily complete a minimum of 85 semester units of law study, including all required courses, with a cumulative grade point average of 2.00 on the 4.00 scale and who have met all other residency and scholastic requirements. The State Bar of California requires that the course of study for the JD degree be completed no earlier than thirty-two months and no later than eighty-four months (7 years) after a student has commenced study at UWLA or a law school from which UWLA has accepted transfer credit. Except as provided in rule 4.30 of the Admissions Rules (Legal education in a foreign state or country), completion of a professional law degree program at this law school other than for the Juris Doctor degree does not qualify a student to take the California Bar Examination or satisfy the requirements for admission to practice law in California. It may not qualify a student to take the bar examination or to satisfy requirements for admission to the practice of law in any other jurisdiction. A student intending to seek admission to practice law should contact the admitting authority in the jurisdictions where the student intends to qualify to sit for the bar examination or to be admitted to practice for information regarding their legal education requirements. Full-time Program Full-time students generally carry a twelve-unit course load per semester and attend assigned weekday, daytime classes. (Scheduling may require attendance in evening classes as well.) Advanced full-time students are permitted to take some electives that are only offered in the evening. This program takes three years to complete, including summer sessions. Students who attend school on a full-time basis should plan to devote all of their time to their studies. Part-time Program The part-time program is designed to accommodate the students who work or who have other significant limitations on time that can be devoted to study. Students attending part-time enroll in a minimum of eight units each semester and three units in each summer, allowing completion of the program in four years (including three summers). Academic Year The School of Law admits students in the fall, spring and summer. The School publishes a sequence of courses for each entering class that ensures the timely accumulation of the necessary units and course requirements for graduation. The School of Law operates on a semester basis. The fall semester commences in August and the spring semester in January. Each semester consists of fifteen weeks plus examination periods. The summer session lasts eight weeks, starting in early June and finishing in late July. Students may enter law school at the beginning of any term. Students enrolled in either the full- or part-time program are required to attend summer sessions in order to complete the prescribed program for the Juris Doctor Degree. The summer program also affords an opportunity for full-time students to lighten the workload normally carried during the regular school year or to broaden their legal background by taking additional electives in areas of interest.
